I spent nearly 5 months, from diagnosis to completion of active treatment. During this time, I was constantly attending appointments, speaking to medical professionals and meeting others who were undergoing similar treatment. Finishing treatment leaves you with very mixed emotions; relief that it's over but also, the feeling that you are suddenly on your own .I had been determined to get back to being physically active as soon as possible and became frustrated when this didn't happen as quickly as I would have liked. Starting the programme felt slow to begin with but I persevered and, after a few sessions, I began to understand. It's not just about physical, it's a whole body mindset. I learned to slow down and focus on the parts of my body that had been affected by treatment. I could move my arms fairly well but when I began the programme and really focussed on isolating the affected areas, I could feel scar tissue being broken down. Relaxation techniques were challenging for me but I was able to share this and get advice from India and others on the programme. I still find this a little tricky but I am learning; I have India's words in my head to help me. "Often the things we need the most, are the most challenging for us". The encouraging messages from India on the community tree and zoom meetings helped me to stay connected and feel less isolated. When I started this programme, my diary entry simply said, "I feel weak and tired but ready for the challenge". My final diary entry was more like an essay! I have now rejoined the gym and am back doing exercise classes. It is good to feel more like me but also, be kind to myself at times when things don't feel so good.
Gentle Cancer Recovery does what it says on the tin – it’s beautifully put together and progresses gently, which was excellent when I was first emerging from cancer treatment. There are many facets to the programme – daily walking, lymph drainage exercises, relaxation sessions – but the yoga-based exercise sessions were my favourite and the most useful. I was very weak and wobbly after months of chemotherapy and very little exercise – even beginner’s yoga routines I found online proved too challenging – but this programme takes all these challenges into account and progresses very slowly and gradually.
I started Gentle Recovery for Breast Cancer 8 weeks after I finished treatment. The guidance and support I received from this programme felt like the next best thing to having a personal trainer come to my house every day! I highly recommend
I was so happy to find this amazing online course, 3 years after my mastectomy and LAT Flap reconstruction. I was still experiencing tightness and restricted movement on the side of my surgery and I didn’t know how to safely stretch and exercise. India’s LAT Flap modification video helped me to understand my surgery better and how to adapt exercises for this type of reconstruction. The exercise sessions were easy to follow and enjoyable, and with each passing day I felt my posture improving, my shoulder movement improving and now I don’t need my husband’s help to wash my hair anymore! Thank you, India
This programme has been my sanctuary. I felt abandoned and alone when my treatment ended and had no idea how to help my body recover. I also didn’t know how to cope with the anxiety I was experiencing. The relaxation audios were my go-to anytime I felt my anxiety levels rising. The relaxation techniques I learnt have been invaluable, I use them when I go for scans and follow-ups appointments, and they help me stay in control, despite the stress
This online course has helped me take back a sense of control of my life. Before I started my fatigue was so debilitating,The bite-sized sessions meant I could do them when my energy levels were higher and then I did the relaxation sessions before sleep which really helped me get deeper rest at night. So happy I can continue to use these resources for a whole year
This programme has been wonderful to help strengthen my body and mind following surgery. There is no pressure or time restraint to complete the modules and you can move through them at your own pace. Having the option to go back and redo any module has been useful. The only challenge is to make time for yourself but once you have achieved this, it's well worth it! Thank you for your help, support and understanding!
